The injury the athlete has done is a grade 2 high lateral ankle sprain, which is a soft tissue injury. In this case the athlete was playing rugby league for his local rugby club. The athete was running with the ball and he changed his direction too quickly resulting in rolling his ankle outwards ( inversion), which is a indirect injury. A grade 2 high lateral ankle sprain is the result of both stretching and some taring of the ligaments. There is increased swelling and pain associated with a grade 2 high lateral ankle sprain, and moderate loss of stability at the high ankle joint. Grade 2 High ankle spains occur when your ankle is loaded severely and pushed into excessive dorsiflexion, for example this often occurs in rugby league tackles.
